Project Summary
In a bar rolling mill, dimensional control is not only a final inspection task. It is part of the production process. An online bar diameter measurement system helps bring dimensional information closer to the rolling line, allowing operators to monitor relevant data while production is running.
DBM completed the installation, commissioning, functional adaptation and operator training for two online bar diameter measurement systems at a steel producer in Oman. The systems support online dimensional monitoring and present mill-weight information, alarm status and related data through the measurement software and workshop display.
The project included more than equipment installation. DBM adapted the mill-weight display, multiple-data export, mill-weight alarm settings, workshop-screen layout and PLC alarm-signal coordination according to the customer’s operating requirements. We sincerely thank the steel producer for its trust in DBM and for the close cooperation of its site, production and electrical teams throughout installation, testing, feedback and training.
To protect customer confidentiality, the steel producer’s name and identifiable customer information are not disclosed. The available project records do not include customer-approved accuracy, measurement-range or long-term operating statistics; therefore, no unverified performance claims are made here.
Equipment Functions and Site Application
Online Bar Dimensional Monitoring
An online bar diameter measurement system is designed for bar rolling lines. Installed at the appropriate measurement position, it collects and presents dimension-related information while bars are being produced. Its role is not to replace every quality inspection, but to move dimensional monitoring closer to the production process and provide operators with more timely process information.
The final measurement range, accuracy and equipment configuration must be confirmed according to the product range, measurement position and customer acceptance requirements.
The project included the positioning and commissioning of two systems, power-up checks, offline testing, online testing and production follow-up. The engineering team also tracked operation during the customer’s rolling schedule, including the use of a 16 mm bar product during commissioning.
Mill-Weight Display and Production Decisions
Mill-weight information is closely related to bar-product management. Based on the customer’s operating requirements, the software was updated to display mill-weight information. The same information was added to the workshop display so that production personnel could access it more easily from the operating area.
DBM also adjusted the workshop-screen content and display size to suit the customer’s actual viewing and operating requirements. This made the measurement information more practical for daily production use.
Data Retention and Abnormal-Condition Alerts
The system was updated to support multiple-data export and mill-weight alarm settings. Data export helps the customer retain and review measurement-related records, while alarm settings provide a clearer way to define monitoring conditions and alert operators.
Alarm signals were coordinated with the customer’s PLC. Relay selection and field-component replacement were discussed with the customer in consideration of locally sourced components and the existing control arrangement.
Remote Display and Operation Support
During commissioning, the project team resolved an optical-fiber issue affecting the remote KVM connection, restoring normal display on two remote monitors. The customer also raised a requirement related to screen and keyboard/mouse response delay. DBM continued the technical coordination and evaluated possible hardware configuration improvements.
These activities helped integrate the measurement system with the customer’s existing operating, display and control environment rather than leaving it as an isolated inspection unit.
Customer Operation and Independent Calibration
DBM provided several rounds of training covering equipment operation, system use and independent calibration. The training was intended to help the customer’s operators carry out routine operation, review data and perform calibration according to the agreed procedure.
Project Scope and Delivered Functions

| Electrical and air systems | Control-box wiring, cabinet checks, air-line connection and purge testing | Supports equipment energizing and operation |
| Commissioning | Offline testing, online testing and production follow-up | Verifies operation under actual rolling conditions |
| Data functions | Mill-weight display, multiple-data export and alarm settings | Makes measurement data easier to view, retain and use |
| Workshop display | Adjustment of screen content and display size | Improves access to key information in the production area |
| Control interface | PLC alarm coordination and relay-selection support | Supports connection with the existing plant control system |
| Operator training | Operation, system use and independent-calibration training | Builds customer capability for routine use and maintenance |
Engineering Delivery
The project started with equipment and foundation checks, followed by the installation, alignment and positioning of the measurement cars and foundation plates. The team then completed control-box and electrical-cabinet wiring, air-line connection, power-up checks, circuit-board replacement and purge testing.
After the equipment was ready for testing, DBM carried out offline tests, online tests and production follow-up. The engineering team reviewed operation, data presentation and customer use during actual rolling activities and completed remote software updates and functional adjustments based on site feedback.
The customer’s requirements included mill-weight display, workshop-screen presentation, alarm signals, remote KVM operation and improved operating convenience. These requirements were handled as part of the commissioning and delivery coordination. The project was closed with customer training, independent calibration guidance, site acceptance and project-signature completion.
Project Value and Customer Benefit
Bringing dimensional information closer to production. Relevant bar-dimension information becomes available during rolling, giving production personnel more timely process data and moving dimensional attention from post-process checking toward process monitoring.
Turning measurement output into usable production information. Mill-weight display, multiple-data export and alarm settings make the measurement result easier to view, retain and apply during daily operation.
Connecting the equipment with the plant environment. PLC alarm coordination, workshop-display adaptation and remote KVM support improve compatibility with the customer’s existing control and display environment.
From equipment delivery to customer self-operation. Operation and independent calibration training helps the customer build the capability to use the equipment in routine production, rather than simply receiving a completed machine.
The project was made possible by the customer’s trust and close cooperation. DBM appreciates the support provided by the customer’s production, electrical and site teams in confirming installation conditions, testing the system, sharing operating feedback and completing training. For DBM, successful delivery means more than installing equipment; it means working with the customer until the equipment can become a useful part of the production process.

Equipment Overview and Applications
An online bar diameter measurement system is an industrial measurement solution for bar rolling lines. It typically includes an online measurement unit, measurement car, control and data-processing system, operator display and project-specific interfaces. Depending on the application, the system can support dimensional monitoring, mill-weight display, data export, alarm settings, workshop-screen presentation and PLC signal coordination.
Typical applications include:
| Application | Equipment Role |
| Bar rolling process monitoring | Provides online dimension-related information while production is running |
| Mill-weight information management | Displays mill-weight-related data in the software and workshop display |
| Quality-data recording | Supports data export for production records and further review |
| Abnormal-condition alerts | Provides project-defined mill-weight alarms and PLC signal coordination |
| Remote operation and centralized display | Works with customer KVM, monitors and workshop displays where required |
